Janine Haines was a practicing teacher in South Australia, and the first Australian Democrats senator.
In 1986 she became the first woman to be elected parliamentary leader of an Australian political party. She was a feminist and an advocate of social justice, and believed that women should demonstrate their ability to be effective parliamentarians.
Haines was known for these glasses, which she wore throughout her career.
