This postcard depicts Muriel Matters, a member of the Women’s Freedom League.
Matters, born in Adelaide, was a suffragette, campaigning for votes for women in Britain. She was also a lecturer, actor, journalist and elocutionist.
Postcards were a means for suffrage organisations to advertise their cause and help raise money for the campaigns. The Women’s Freedom League sold cards that featured photographs of their organisers and leaders. The low sales price, generally one English penny each, allowed those with little money to purchase a physical record of the movement.
